Concrete Foundations for Ratio/Proportion

$15.00

There are a number of Common Core standards that address Ratios.  There are no traditional Montessori materials designed to address ratios, but they can (and should) be introduced concretely before diving into the abstract explanations that are offered in most textbooks.  Fear not!  This can be done with traditional Montessori materials used in non-traditional ways, supplemented by other readily available items like checkers.

This collection of 6 lessons (58 pages) introduces principles of Ratios required by common core standards in a manner that is aligned with the Montessori Method.  Once concepts are introduced and practiced concretely, students can then apply those concepts to real-life experiences, reasoning out the process, rule, or algorithm. Each lesson has a Follow-up activity and a Control of Error.

Description

Children are held accountable for basic knowledge of ratios in 6th grade, but in truth they can be quite successful with these concepts much earlier.  Children with a fundamental understanding of equivalent fractions can be quite successful with these lessons.  As such, the lessons can be wrapped into the curriculum whenever children need a fraction equivalency refresher or to see why fraction equivalencies are relevant.
