Over the course of a 9-week period, children encounter seven types of syllables in words of increasing complexity. Breaking words into syllables and categorizing them by type leads children to a deeper understanding of how words are constructed. Through these activities, Syllabication:
- empowers those who struggle with decoding and spelling
- delights accomplished spellers who enjoy the puzzle-like feel of the process
- encourages all students to be more attentive to roots and affixes
- enhances decoding of multi-syllabic words
- enriches vocabulary for writing and reading
