Concrete Foundations II: Algebraic Operations

$15.00

Multiplying algebraic binomials and factoring quadratic equations can be done spatially/geometrically using Golden Beads! This allows students to understand these operations in ways that abstract approaches never will. No longer are algebraic operations about rules to be memorized and followed. They are about geometric truths that are built, and later visualized, to arrive confidently at the desired solution.

Concrete Foundations for Algebraic Operations is a fully developed E-II/Secondary sequence of lessons that can be implemented with nothing more than Golden Beads and a box of bead bars. The sequence leads directly to abstract processes through a set of isolated difficulties. Students who completed even the earliest Montessori lessons in squaring and square roots will find these lessons fairly intuitive from the start. For students new to Montessori, the geometric principles are simple enough that they will catch on quite quickly.

Description

Concrete Foundations for Algebraic Operations provides a concrete, hands-on approach to :

multiplying algebraic binomials to a produce quadratic equation AND
factoring quadratic equations back to the algebraic binomial factors

Presentations follow the sequence recommended for math instruction by both Dr. Montessori and modern cognitive neuroscientists: concrete/sensorial experiences bridging to abstract formulaic approaches using mathematical reasoning.  All of the lessons can be given with nothing more than Golden Beads and a box of bead bars.
