Roman Numerals explores the merits of positional notation while Alternate Base Systems plumbs the depths of place value. Lessons come with all tickets and tables needed to present the lessons. Each lesson has a provided follow-up with Control of Error, and several have ideas for extensions to encourage children’s independent pursuits.

  • Roman Numerals is more an activity in logic than in calculation; children can have great success with these ideas almost irrespective of their prowess in other areas of mathematics. Roman Numerals lessons are appropriate for older E-I or younger E-II children.
  • Alternate Bases lessons can be quite meaningful in a variety of contexts including children working towards mastery of decimal operations or powers of numbers, and those beginning to explore the concept of volume.
