Level II: Flora Fans builds upon the basic set for Beginning Botanists with additional card sets delineating five “parts of …” elements of the shoot system, including Parts of the Stem, Parts of the Leaf, Parts of the Flower, Parts of the Fruit, and Parts of the Seed. This card set also includes Parts of the Bulb (total 39 nomenclature concepts on 3-part cards). Also included are black-line masters of the pictures for each Parts of . . . card set to enable children to create their own booklets as a follow-up activity.
Teachers: please note that bulbs are actually a type of subterranean stem rather than a part of the shoot system.
Level III: Ecology Enthusiasts completes the studies initiated with Beginning Botanists and Flora Fans, adding 30 additional card sets (total of 101 three-part cards) detailing the tremendous diversity expressed in each part of the shoot system. These advanced card sets provide not only source material for lessons but also resources for children to research specimens that they bring to class or observe in nature. Card sets within a given part of the shoot system are organized such that the student can progress independently to levels of greater sophistication and finer detail if his interests so lead him.
These are a beautiful and informative cards. The definitions are clear, and help bring Botany to life! Children like finding real parts of plants to match up with the cards. It's fun to play matching games with the cards themselves too. -Margit H. Have you implented this fabulous work of art in your classroom? Send us feedback!
